1 Posterstein Castle in Posterstein

Between Altenburg and Gera, the medieval hilltop castle of Posterstein rises, clearly visible with its 25-meter-high keep.

The 800-year-old castle was originally an imperial fief of the vogts of Weida and Plauen.

From 1305 onwards, the Rulers of Reuß also had their seat here.

Until the 17th century, the Reuß and Wettin families fought over Posterstein.

In the 15th century, the property was passed to the Puster family, who were accordingly referred to as „Postern zum Steine“ (Postern of the Stone).

Since the 16th century, the village is called Posterstein.

After a turbulent history, it is now a regional history museum.

Guided tours, exhibitions, various events, and concerts take place there now.

Civil weddings can be held at the castle, there are offers for children, and at Pentecost there is a jousting tournament and medieval spectacle.

Together with the village church, in which you can find rich baroque carvings made of linden wood, and the nearby park, the castle forms an impressive ensemble of monuments.

Posterstein is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in Thuringia.
