99 Technical Museum Drop Forge in Zella-Mehlis

99 Technical Museum Drop Forge in Zella-Mehlis

The building was constructed around 1840 as a sawmill, later taken over by a blacksmith company, and converted into a drop forge in 1918.

Today, this heritage-protected site serves as a technical museum and is a fascinating experience for enthusiasts of functional historical technology.

The exhibition showcases numerous historical hand tools and machines.

Visitors can observe the production of drop-forged parts and the manufacturing of tools.

Forging techniques are demonstrated, and if you wish, you can shape glowing steel yourself.

Particularly impressive are some of Germany’s oldest board drop hammers, which weigh over 16 tons and stand more than 4 meters high.

A functional waterwheel and a turbine illustrate traditional water power usage.

Additionally, a Deutz diesel engine was used to drive the machines.

Each year, the museum hosts special events.

For students, apprentices, and excursion groups, special educational programs can be arranged upon request.
