98 Veit Bach Obermühle in Wechmar
98 Veit Bach Obermühle in Wechmar
Between 1590 and 1600, Veit Bach and his family came to Wechmar from Hungary.
They were warmly welcomed by the Eißer family of bakers, likely due to family ties.
Until his death in 1619, Veit Bach worked as a miller and baker and played music together with his son Hans.
Historical research has proven that the ancestors of Johann Sebastian Bach worked, among other places, at the Wechmarer Obermühle.
Therefore, the Wechmarer Obermühle (Veit Bach Obermühle) and the Wechmarer Oberbackhaus (Bach Family Home) are the oldest known places associated with the Bach family.
In the old residential house of the former mill, a Thuringian wooden-beamed parlor from the 1580s was discovered.
Visitors to the mill can experience historical daily life firsthand.
In the old mill house, ancient grain varieties are identified, flour is produced, and then processed further in the old baking oven.
On the upper floor, an 11-panel painting brings 500 years of musical history in Thuringia to life.
It is the largest panel painting depicting the history of the Bach musician family.
