97 Possenturm near Sondershausen

The Possen is located in the middle of the Hainleite mountain range, an area rich in forests and wildlife.

For this reason, the princely family of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen had the hunting lodge „Zum Possen“ built in the 1730s.

It served as a summer residence.

The origin of the name „Possen“ has not been clearly determined, even by various scholars.

Not far from the hunting lodge, the octagonal, eight-story Possenturm was built in 1781 to provide a view of Sondershausen.

However, upon reaching the top, one does not see the city but instead enjoys a magnificent panoramic view of the Harz Mountains and the Thuringian Forest.

Today, the approximately 42-meter-high tower is considered the tallest half-timbered tower in Europe.

The „Zum Possen“ leisure and recreation park offers a variety of activities and overnight accommodations in a bungalow village.

The site features an old bear enclosure from 1867 and even live bears.

After visiting the many animal enclosures, visitors can enjoy traditional German cuisine in the hunting lodge before continuing their exploration.
