95 1st German Bratwurst museum in Holzhausen
95 1st German Bratwurst museum in Holzhausen
There are many fans of the Thüringer Bratwurst, and now there is a museum dedicated to it.
In 2006, the 1st German Bratwurst Museum was opened in Holzhausen.
In 2020, the museum relocated to Mühlhausen.
Devices and machines from several centuries illustrate the evolution of sausage production, from manual labor to industrial manufacturing.
The museum also explores the domestication of pig breeds and their ancestry from wild boars.
History and anecdotes complete the picture of the Bratwurst, especially the Thüringer Bratwurst.
They serve as the perfect seasoning for the experience.
Naturally, the museum highlights the first documented mention of the Thüringer Bratwurst on January 20, 1404, in the Arnstadt convent.
Curiosities are also part of the museum.
One of the highlights is the annual „Bratwurstiade,“ where participating teams compete in unique and entertaining contests.
Guests can also enjoy a humorous evening with culinary delights at the Bratwurst Theater.
The museum’s website offers even more entertainment, from information on the worldwide spread of the Bratwurst to Bratwurst-related music.
Additional information
Current Information about the Bratwurst MuseumThe Bratwurst Museum is no longer open at its former location in Holzhausen.
The 1st German Bratwurst Museum was inaugurated on May 28, 2006, in Holzhausen, a district of the municipality Amt Wachsenburg in the Ilm district, 6 km from Arnstadt.Over its 15 years of existence, the museum attracted more than 800,000 visitors to the small town below Wachsenburg with its exhibitions and events.
Due to the high visitor numbers (50,000 per year), the infrastructure at the original location reached its limits.
As a result, the museum searched for a new site.
On April 1, 2020, operations at the Holzhausen location ceased.
A new site was chosen in the southwest of Mühlhausen, in the Mühlhäuser Stadtwald area, covering 3.7 hectares—making it four times larger than the previous location.
The foundation stone for the new building was laid on January 20, 2020.
On August 16, 2023, the Bratwurst Museum opened at its new location. A total of 15 exhibition areas are planned.
