94 Annenkirche in Eisenach

94 Annenkirche in Eisenach

The Annenkirche belongs to the Annen-Michaelis district, located in the western part of Eisenach’s city center.

A special feature of the church is the Sunday service with Holy Communion.

Above the archway, the following inscription can be read: „Hospital of St. Anne – founded by Saint Elisabeth in 1226.“

It is believed that Saint Elisabeth founded the Annenkirche together with the Annenstift.

The original chapel burned down in 1342.

It was rebuilt and later expanded into a church.

In the 18th century, it served as a garrison church.

Over the years, the church has been repeatedly renovated and redesigned.

The two beautiful Renaissance portals on the street-facing side are particularly striking.

Inside, little remains of the original appearance. In front of the Resurrection Window stands a late Gothic crucifix.

The baptismal font dates back to the Romanesque period, and next to it stands the new Easter candlestick.

Several times a year, musical vespers take place in the Annenkirche.
