91 Kaisersaal Building Schwarzburg Castle in Schwarzburg

91 Kaisersaal Building Schwarzburg Castle in Schwarzburg

High above the romantic Schwarzatal Valley sits Schwarzburg Castle.

It was first mentioned in records in 1123 as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Schwarzburg.

The Schwarzburg family had already been referenced in chronicles in the 8th and 9th centuries and was one of the oldest and most powerful dynasties in Thuringia.

Several fires destroyed the castle complex before it was rebuilt in the 18th century as a baroque summer residence.

In 1943, some buildings were lost due to planned renovations for the „Reich Guest House“.

Today, the main building is being systematically preserved.

Only the baroque Kaisersaal Building (constructed between 1713 and 1719) and the adjoining garden terrace have been restored and are open to visitors, including the 5,000 m² garden.

Life-sized depictions of medieval kings and emperors, along with 100 emperor medallions, create the impression of an extraordinary picture gallery, the Kaisersaal.

Stucco elements and ceiling paintings further enhance this effect.

Exhibitions provide insight into the Schwarzburg dynasty, the castle’s history, and the renowned Schwarzburg Porcelain Art Workshops.
