90 Citizens‘ Tower in Gotha

90 Citizens‘ Tower in Gotha

In 1998, thirteen citizens of Gotha had a vision—the construction of a lookout tower!

They wanted to build it near the old Arnoldi Tower, as the restricted area on the Krahnberg had been lifted after more than 60 years.

Since all citizens of Gotha were to be involved in this charitable project, a fitting name was quickly found: Citizens‘ Tower.

A popular local recreation area was to be revived while also honoring the legacy of the Arnoldi family.

The Arnoldi Tower was originally built in honor of the father of Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi.

His significant achievements included founding Germany’s first fire insurance bank (1820) and the first life insurance bank (1827).

He lived by the principle: „Public interest before self-interest,“ a motto that also guided the visionaries of Gotha.

On June 13, 2009, the tower at Inselsbergblick was inaugurated.

After climbing 158 steps, visitors reach the top platform of the 30-meter-high steel structure.

From here, a stunning view opens up over the city of Gotha with Friedenstein Castle, the Inselsberg, and, on clear days, even as far as the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.
