87 Bismarck Tower in Apolda
87 Bismarck Tower in Apolda
After the death of Otto von Bismarck, the German Student Union called for the construction of stone memorials across the country.
This was meant to express gratitude for the unification of the German Empire.
In 1904, the 23.75-meter-high Bismarck Tower was inaugurated.
The tower is primarily built of limestone and features a 3-meter-wide fire bowl on top.
During World War II, it was temporarily used for airspace surveillance.
On the evening of September 1, 1949, the tower was renamed „Peace Tower“ under pressure from the SED.
Thanks to the support of various companies, the Bismarck Tower was renovated and reopened in 2004 on its 100th anniversary.
After climbing 77 stone steps and a metal spiral staircase, visitors are rewarded with a magnificent view over the city of Apolda.
