84 Simson Factory, Gate B in Suhl

84 Simson Factory, Gate B in Suhl

Founded in 1856, the company Simson & Co. initially produced charcoal steel, which was later used for rifle manufacturing.

In the following years, the company expanded into bicycle production, and in 1911, it began mass-producing automobiles.

In the 1930s, the Jewish Simson family was expropriated, automobile production ceased, and arms manufacturing intensified.

After World War II, the product range included household appliances, bicycles, baby carriages, and hunting weapons.

Under orders from the Soviet military administration, a sidecar-compatible motorcycle with a 250 cc four-stroke engine, the AWO 425, was developed.

In 1955, Simson began producing small motorcycles, which were expanded in 1964 with the well-known Simson „bird“ series: Schwalbe, Spatz, Star, and Sperber.

After the company was liquidated by the Treuhand, several attempts to restart production failed, leading to its final closure in 2002.

Today, Gate B houses the workshop of the Suhl Vehicle Museum Association.

The Suhl Vehicle Museum is located in the Congress Centrum Suhl. Around 220 exhibits from all areas of vehicle manufacturing showcase the industry’s diversity.

Special attention is given to Suhl’s successful motorsport history.
