83 AWE Main Gate in Eisenach

83 AWE Main Gate in Eisenach

In 1928, Bayerische Motorenwerke AG (BMW) in Munich acquired the DIXI automobile factory in Eisenach and began producing passenger cars.

By 1936, BMW had established a modern aircraft engine factory on the northeastern outskirts of Eisenach, significantly increasing its involvement in military production.

After World War II, the aircraft engine plant was dismantled.

The AWE Main Gate was architecturally modeled after the gatehouse of the BMW aircraft engine factory.

In fact, materials from the original gatehouse were used in its construction.

The gate incorporates design elements characteristic of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

In 1946, it was erected at its current location, serving as the main entrance to the VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach (AWE) until 1991.

Today, the AWE Main Gate, a listed historical monument, houses various associations dedicated to preserving the history of automobile manufacturing and motorsports in Eisenach.

The gate is located within sight of the Automobile World Eisenach Museum(automobile welt eisenach).
