81 Pleß Tower near Breitungen

81 Pleß Tower near Breitungen

The Pleß is the northernmost mountain of the Vorderrhön range.

The basalt peak, standing at 645 meters, is of volcanic origin.

It is a popular excursion destination and features an observation tower.

The first wooden tower with a viewing platform was built in 1921.

However, it collapsed during a stormy spring night in 1934, and a new tower was erected in August 1936.

In 1962, the Pleß became a restricted military area, and the tower was demolished.

In 1991, large parts of the mountain and its peak were reopened to the public, allowing visitors to hike to the Pleß once again.

Soon, the idea of rebuilding an observation tower emerged.

On October 2, 1999, a limestone tower, now clad in titanium sheeting, was inaugurated.

From its 20-meter-high viewing platform, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Thuringian Forest, the Rhön Mountains, the Werratal Valley, and even Wartburg Castle.
