80 Rathaus in Hildburghausen

80 Rathaus in Hildburghausen

The town hall is the most striking building in the city center of Hildburghausen.

On the ruins of a stone house that was destroyed in a fire in 1388, the citizens built the first town hall in 1395.

In 1595, during a comprehensive expansion, it acquired its current Renaissance-style appearance.

Over time, the town hall has always reflected the self-confident attitude of the town councilors and the city’s citizens.

In 1991, plans began for extensive restoration and preservation work aimed at faithfully reconstructing the building’s original structure and layout as it was in 1595.

During the renovation, which started in 1995, special emphasis was placed on preserving historical elements.

As part of this, the tower keeper’s apartment was restored to the way it looked when the last tower keeper lived there and is also open for visitors.

On the first floor, a permanent exhibition titled *“Chronicle in Stone“* presents the history of the town hall.

Other attractions in Hildburghausen include Trützschler’s Milk and Advertising Museum and the Hildburghausen City Museum.

The city also hosts an annual Theresienfest and a biker gathering.
