8 Otto Dix’s Birthplace in Gera

In the eastern Thuringian city of Gera, the painter and graphic artist Otto Dix was born on December 2, 1891.

His birthplace is located in the historic district of Untermhaus, near St. Mary’s Church at Mohrenplatz.

Here, art enthusiasts are introduced to his work, which lies between realism and New Objectivity.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the painter’s and graphic artist’s birthplace was converted into a museum.

The exhibition is considered the numerically largest collection of the artist’s works and embodies, in context, his socially critical perspective on societal conditions.

Aspects such as poverty and violence are depicted in his paintings through garish, grotesque details, exaggerated to the point of „distorted recognizability.“

Each year, Gera hosts events such as the Schwarzbiernacht (Black Beer Night), the fireworks festival „Flammende Sterne“ (Flaming Stars), the Höhlerfest, the Märchenmarkt (Fairy Tale Market), and the children’s media festival „Goldener Spatz“ (Golden Sparrow); every two years, the Höhler Biennale takes place.
