75 Bachhaus in Eisenach

75 Bachhaus in Eisenach

The Bachhaus, approximately 550 years old, was opened in 1907 by the Neue Bachgesellschaft in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach.

It was the world’s first Bach Museum.

Some rooms in the museum are presented as the living spaces of a middle-class family during Bach’s time.

In 2007, the historical Bachhaus was renovated.

With a modern new building next door, the museum now offers even more exhibition space, and the unique music of Johann Sebastian Bach can be heard in many areas.

The exhibition showcases pictures, musical manuscripts, and historical musical instruments belonging to Bach.

All museum visitors experience live musical performances on keyboard instruments from Bach’s time (including a Silbermann spinet, two house organs, and a clavichord), which is unique in German music museums.

The Bachhaus in Eisenach was included in the 2001 „Blaubuch,“ a list of cultural heritage sites.
