70 Kornhaus Georgenthal

70 Kornhaus Georgenthal

The Kornhaus, which is still standing today and built in the Gothic style, is part of the former Cistercian monastery complex „St. Georgenthal.“

The building likely dates back to the 15th century.

Its original purpose cannot be determined definitively.

However, since a chimney flue is built into the southeast corner, it is likely that it was used as a winter refectory.

Given that the St. Georgenthal Monastery was a popular pilgrimage site, it is also possible that the building was used as an accommodation facility or hospital.

The northern gable is particularly impressive with its magnificent Gothic stone rose window.

The building gets its name from the post-monastic period when it served as a rent and tribute building for the Georgenthal district.

It was used as a grain storage facility until 1960.

Today, the Kornhaus houses a lapidarium with stone artifacts from the ruins, such as window arches and Romanesque capitals.

The remains of the monastery complex, including the Kornhaus, belong to the properties of the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten (Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation).
