7 Jagdahaus Gabelbach Ilmenau

7 Jagdahaus Gabelbach Ilmenau

The building near Ilmenau, at the foot of the Kickelhahn, was built in 1783 under Duke Carl August as a hunting lodge.

It is a simple, late Baroque functional structure.

Goethe was a frequent guest here.

In 1949, a Goethe memorial site was established in the hunting lodge.

By 1969, it became a museum, offering insights into the hunting customs and social life at the Weimar court, as well as Goethe’s diverse activities in the Thuringian Forest.

The building underwent complete restoration in 1995.

Since 2012, the ground floor has hosted the exhibition „The Kickelhahn – Goethe’s Forest in Transition,“ focusing on the unique features of the Kickelhahn over the past 250 years.

The Kickelhahn (Kickelhahn Tower, Model 57), the Goethe Cottage (Model 58), and the Gabelbach Hunting Lodge can also be reached via the Goethe Hiking Trail (20 km, Ilmenau – Stützerbach).
