69 Creuzburg in Creuzburg
According to legend, the monk Boniface erected a cross at the site where Creuzburg Castle stands today.
Before the construction of the castle itself in 1170, a Benedictine monastery was established at this location.
Many important historical figures were guests at the monastery and the castle.
A meeting between Emperor Henry IV and Archbishop Siegfried of Mainz was recorded as early as 1069.
Landgrave Ludwig IV and his wife Elisabeth also lived at Creuzburg for some time.
It was here that Elisabeth gave birth to her son Hermann. For centuries, the fortress served as the administrative seat of Creuzburg.
Over time, many well-known guests stayed there, including Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Napoleon, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Due to its various uses, the castle was frequently remodeled until 1972.
By the mid-1970s, it was at risk of falling into ruin.
In 1981, a community initiative took responsibility for the castle, saving it from decay.
In 1991, ownership of the castle was transferred to the city of Creuzburg.
The full restoration of the castle was completed in 1997.
Today, it houses a hotel, a museum, and a pottery workshop, and it is also used for wedding ceremonies.
Guided tours, concerts, a medieval festival, the art night, and the Michael Praetorius festival take place there
