65 Automobile World Eisenach
65 Automobile World Eisenach
After reunification, the East German automobile industry was no longer able to sell its vehicles, leading to the closure of the Eisenach automobile factory by the Treuhand agency on April 10, 1991.
Most of the factory has since been demolished.
One of the remaining historic buildings from the early days of the factory was renovated and, on June 4, 2005, became home to the Automobile World Eisenach museum.
Another surviving structure is the AWE main gate (Model 83).
Since 1967, Eisenach has had an automobile museum with an extensive collection of historic vehicles.
The new museum, located at a historic site, documents over 100 years of Eisenach’s automotive history.
The exhibition is divided into twelve sections, each representing a period in history with vehicles produced in Eisenach.
In addition to the cars, visitors can see artifacts and historical documents reflecting the automobile industry and daily life of each era.
