63 Round Church in Untersuhl
63 Round Church in Untersuhl
Between the Rhön Mountains and the Thuringian Forest, right on the Hessian-Thuringian border, lies the beautiful Werra Valley and the town of Gerstungen, first mentioned in historical records in 744.
In the district of Untersuhl stands a unique structure—a round church.
The exact time of its construction remains unknown.
Theories and assumptions range from a Roman tomb to a sacred building with a dual function as a defensive tower.
The church’s first bells, dating back to the early 17th century, were melted down during World War I.
After the war, three new bells were installed and electrified around 1970.
In 1993, the first restoration assessment was conducted by academic restorer Dietsch and art historian Neumann-Dietsch.
Extensive examinations revealed Gothic wall paintings with Christian motifs, some of which were uncovered.
A preliminary estimate dates them to around 1420.
