62 Viaduct in Apolda

The Apolda Viaduct is one of those technical and transport historical monuments that, despite its old age, is still fully functional.

The achievements of the workers who built the railway line in a short time with primitive tools are truly admirable.

The viaduct is located in a circular track section with a radius of 1,200 meters at station point – kilometer 72.360 – on the main railway line Halle-Erfurt-Eisenach.

It has a length of 95 meters, a width of 8.79 meters, and a height of 23.0 meters.

The central section of the viaduct consists of two circular arch-shaped main vaults with a clear span of 12.56 meters.

The pier of the two main arches, each 2.97 meters wide, was statically designed as a support pillar.

A lion’s head was placed on the central pillar as a symbolic decoration.

The two side wings of the viaduct, which connect the respective support pillars with the conical embankment, each consist of four circular vaults with a clear span of 4.24 meters, arranged in two levels.

The vault thickness is 0.63 meters, and the vaults have a clear height of 6.42 meters (lower level) and 6.10 meters (upper level).

Annual festivals include the Beer Summer, the Festival of Lights, the Onion Market, and Fashion Night.
