61 Werraquelle in Fehrenbach
61 Werraquelle in Fehrenbach
In the middle of the forest, between Masserberg and Fehrenbach, on the Zeupelsberg at an altitude of 760 meters, water once bubbled from many spots in the marshy ground.
It gathered where the slope inclines southwest, forming a clear little brook.
This brook marks the source of the Werra River.
In 1897, members of the Fehrenbach Thuringian Forest Association decided to capture and appropriately design the spring.
Master mason Elias Traut and the then-forester Georg Schröder jointly designed the plan.
Thus, the spring structure was created using local stones, with a sculpted lion’s head as the water outlet.
On August 14, 1898, the grand inauguration took place in the form of the first forest festival at the Werra Spring.
Hiking trails provide easy access to the spring, and the traditional Werra Spring Festival is held annually.
