6 Burgruine Scharfenberg
6 Burgruine Scharfenberg
The ruins of Scharfenberg Castle rise above Thal, the northeastern district of the mountain town of Ruhla.
The castle was first mentioned in records in 1137.
Throughout its eventful history, Scharfenburg frequently changed owners until 1401, when it suffered significant damage during the expulsion of the robber knight Heinrich von Laucha and its capture by the troops of the Landgrave.
In 1403, Scharfenburg became the center of its own landgraviate judicial district.
In 1478, the von Ütterodt brothers were granted lordship over Scharfenburg and administered justice in Thal until the mid-19th century.
Extensive restoration work on the keep and the surrounding ruins in the early 1990s made the tower accessible to visitors.
From the top, visitors are rewarded with a stunning view of the lower Erbstrom Valley, extending to the legendary Hörsel Hills (Modell 41).
The sight of the Hörsel Hills, with their rugged limestone cliffs, ignites the imagination.
One is reminded of the much-sung Tannhäuser Cave, the Venus Cave, and the Jesus Fountain.
