58 Goethehäuschen bei Ilmenau

58 Goethehäuschen bei Ilmenau

“Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh,
In allen Wipfeln spürest du
Kaum einen Hauch;
Die Vögelein schweigen im Walde.
Warte nur – balde ruhest du auch.”

This famous poem was written by Goethe on September 6, 1780, on the wall of this small shelter, which later became known as the Goethehäuschen.

On August 27, 1831, just before his 82nd birthday, Goethe visited this place for the last time, accompanied by mining inspector Mahr.

Unfortunately, in 1870, the house burned down due to the carelessness of berry pickers.

However, four years later, it was faithfully reconstructed.

The Kickelhahn (Kickelhahnturm Model 57), the Goethehäuschen, and the Gabelbach hunting lodge (Model 7) are also accessible via the Goethe Trail (20 km from Ilmenau to Stützerbach).
