57 Kickelhahnturm bei Ilmenau

57 Kickelhahnturm bei Ilmenau

The Kickelhahnturm stands on the 861-meter-high peak of Kickelhahn, which takes a hiker about an hour’s walk to reach.

The mountain’s name is likely derived from the capercaillie (Auerhahn), which used to be hunted in the area.

Preserved specimens of this rare bird can still be seen at the Gabelbach hunting lodge (Model 7), located just below the summit.

The observation tower was built in 1854/55 on the highest mountain of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach at the suggestion of Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna, the daughter-in-law of Carl August.

The tower is 24 meters high and was constructed in a Byzantine style.

From the upper viewing platform, visitors are rewarded with a magnificent view of the highlands of the Thuringian Forest.

The Kickelhahn, the Goethehäuschen (Model 58), and the Gabelbach hunting lodge (Model 7) can also be reached via the Goethe Trail, which stretches over 20 km from Ilmenau to Stützerbach.
