56 Rennsteigwanderhaus in Hörschel
56 Rennsteigwanderhaus in Hörschel
The Rennsteigwanderhaus is located at the beginning of the famous 168.3 km long „Rennsteig“ high-altitude trail, in the district of Hörschel, just west of Eisenach.
According to legend, a true hiker takes a stone from the Werra River at the start of the Rennsteig in Hörschel and carries it all the way to the end in Blankenstein, where the stone is thrown into the Saale River.
What would the Thüringer Wald be without its Rennsteig?
The Rennsteig was first mentioned in 1330 as „Rynnestig“ and has been marked with an „R“ since 1896.
It historically served as a border path, a trade route, a courier path, and a hiking trail.
The GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf, Europe’s largest cross-country race, takes place annually.
About 15,000 runners, Nordic walkers, and hikers participate each year.
The race has been held since the 1970s and features various distances, including a marathon and a supermarathon (72.7 km) starting in Eisenach.
