53 Clemenskapelle in Eisenach
53 Clemenskapelle in Eisenach
The Clemenskapelle is one of the oldest spiritual foundations in the city of Eisenach.
According to legend, Landgrave Hermann I. had the lepers banished from the hospital to the area in front of the Nikolaitor when he founded the Katharinenkloster in 1214.
The Clemenskapelle was first mentioned in historical records in 1295 as a leper house.
Until the 17th century, the chapel was used for services.
In 1813, during the passage of French troops, it suffered severe damage.
Afterward, the building was used as a goat stable and timber storage.
It wasn’t until 1866, with support from Grand Duke Carl Alexander, that the chapel was restored.
Some elements from the original construction have been preserved, such as the walls and windows on the north and east sides.
A comprehensive restoration of the chapel was completed in 2003, and since then, it has become a prominent sight for visitors to the Wartburg city.
