52 Town Hall in Weißensee

52 Town Hall in Weißensee

The Town Hall of Weißensee is the oldest town hall in Thuringia, first mentioned in 1351.

It is one of the oldest town hall buildings in Germany.

The town of Weißensee was founded around 1200 as a planned settlement by the Ludowingian Landgraves of Thuringia, and it is one of the most significant town foundations in Thuringia during the 12th and 13th centuries.

At that time, the current town hall was built as a representative Romanesque stone house and served as both the residence and official seat of the market master.

On March 14, 1265, Weißensee was granted city rights.

A „Stat Book“ from 1434 records the first German purity law for beer, which originated in Thuringia.

On January 9, 1446, a landtag convened by Wilhelm III, the Brave (1424–1482), passed the first Thuringian Land Law in Weißensee.

Between 1994 and 2001, the historic town hall underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of a modern extension, which now houses much of the city administration.

The building also includes exhibition rooms, a reconstructed large ceremonial hall for events and weddings, as well as a traditional town brewery.
