51 Wehrgang in Mühlhausen
51 Wehrgang in Mühlhausen
The construction of the city wall between 1180 and 1250, along with the strength of the city’s economy, allowed Mühlhausen to develop into a Free Imperial City with a seat and voice in the Reichstag.
The city’s prosperity, which lasted until the 15th century, was primarily based on the production and trade of cloth.
The cultivation of woad, used for dyeing the cloth, was also widespread in the Mühlhausen area.
Today, the fortifications still convey the impressive impression of a wealthy medieval metropolis.
The observation platform of the Raven Tower offers a splendid panoramic view over the rooftops of Mühlhausen.
The development of the medieval fortifications surrounding the Imperial City is demonstrated by the three defense towers: initially integrated into the city wall (Sackgassenturm), later projecting out from the wall (Hospital Tower), and eventually built in front of the wall (Raven Tower).
In addition to special exhibitions at the Frauentor, the museum showcases the city’s military history, urban development, city fires and firefighting, festival culture, and a 19th-century style room.
Mühlhausen is also a stop on the German Timber-Frame Road.
