50 St. George’s Church in Eisenach

50 St. George’s Church in Eisenach

St. George’s Church was built around 1150 in honor of Eisenach’s patron saint, St. George, and is located in the heart of Eisenach on the current Market Square.

It was here that Landgrave Ludwig IV and the Hungarian princess Elisabeth exchanged vows.

After being destroyed during the Peasants‘ War, it was restored around 1560 as one of the first Protestant churches.

Martin Luther preached here, and in March 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized in the church.

Later construction work, such as the addition of an open forehall and the building of the 62-meter-high tower, gave St. George’s Church its distinctive silhouette.

The popular town church houses a number of remarkable art monuments from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

It is always worth visiting for a peaceful break from the hectic pace of everyday life.

Regular services and concerts are held here.
