47 Town Hall in Neustadt an der Orla
47 Town Hall in Neustadt an der Orla
Along the old trade route in the Orla Valley, a medieval settlement with a regular street layout called nova civitas – the New Town – was founded around 1287.
This merchant settlement was so heavily affected by the Thirty Years‘ War that many citizen houses had to be rebuilt.
As a result, the town only reached its peak in the 19th century.
The significance of Neustadt an der Orla as a trading town is still reflected today in the expansive market square, which lies between the town hall and the main road, giving visitors a glimpse of the vibrant town life.
The town hall is one of the most important late Gothic municipal buildings in Thuringia, characterized by the elaborate and splendid design of its market facade.
The large, stepped six-part window accentuates the noble character of the town hall chamber.
The intricately decorated grand staircase leading to the stone entrance portal represents medieval tradition, solid craftsmanship, and commercial negotiation skills.
