46 Altenstein Castle near Bad Liebenstein
Near the spa town of Bad Liebenstein lies a popular destination, Altenstein Castle.
The Neo-Renaissance castle is located within a 160-hectare landscape park.
The origins of a fortress here likely date back to the 6th century.
In the 14th century, it was also owned by the Thuringian Landgraves.
In 1733, a fire completely destroyed the castle.
Three years later, Duke Anton Ulrich of Meiningen commissioned the construction of a castle in the Baroque style.
At the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of the „Theater Duke“ Georg II, the castle was expanded and remodeled into a country house in the English style.
This style is unique in Thuringia and can only be found here.
After the castle burned down in 1982, reconstruction efforts began in the late 20th century.
The landscape park has undergone numerous changes over time.
Notably, it was redesigned by Prince Pückler-Muskau, Eduard Petzold, and Peter Joseph Lenné in the mid-19th century.
Today, visitors can admire unique elements of garden art, such as the Knight’s Chapel (Model 67), the Chinese House, and the Luisenthal Waterfall, all impressively integrated into the landscape.
