45 Town Hall in Wernshausen

45 Town Hall in Wernshausen

Wernshausen was first mentioned in documents in 1184.

For over three centuries, timber rafting on the Werra River was the primary source of livelihood for its residents.

Over time, various wood processing businesses and timber trade companies emerged, significantly shaping the economic development of the region.

This connection is also reflected in the Wernshausen coat of arms, which incorporates elements of timber rafting, wood processing, and paper manufacturing.

The current town hall in Wernshausen was originally the property of sawmill owner Ernst Fischer (a retired cavalry officer) before it was used in June 1945 as the headquarters of the Soviet military administration and later as the seat of the local government.

The town hall itself impresses with its imposing appearance and the richly decorated wood carvings on the half-timbered structure.

Today, the building houses the citizen’s office and features a beautiful wedding room with a historic ambiance.
