42 Altes Schloss/Dornburger Schlösser in Dornburg-Camburg
„Freudig trete herein!“
These welcoming words by the poet Goethe greet every visitor to the Dornburg Castles.
Nestled amidst picturesque gardens and vineyards, high above the Saale River, the three Dornburg castles are witnesses to different historical epochs and invite visitors on a unique journey through time.
The *Altes Schloss* is the northernmost and oldest of the three Dornburg Castles.
When it was built, parts of the old imperial fortress were possibly incorporated into its structure.
In the 16th century, the castle was remodeled in the Renaissance style.
From 1750 onwards, it served various purposes, including as a cotton spinning mill, textile factory, and school.
In the 19th century, the castle began to fall into disrepair.
Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach initiated the first restoration works in 1883.
In 1995, the castle was handed over to the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten, which carried out extensive restoration work.
Since 2004, the *Altes Schloss* has served as a meeting place for the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena.
The venue hosts a wide range of events, from small congresses, seminars, and conferences to cultural events of all kinds.
The Dornburg Castles, including their park, are a must-see and include models 42, 43, 44, and 68.
