41 Der Hörselberg mit Berggasthaus „Großer Hörselberg“
Rising high above the Hörseltal, the Hörselberg is a partially forested ridge made of Muschelkalk, offering a home to numerous rare orchid species.
The Hörselberg is steeped in legends, fairy tales, songs, and stories.
One of the most famous is the tale of Frau Venus, who lures the minnesinger Tannhäuser to the magical mountain, the basis for Richard Wagner’s opera *Tannhäuser*.
Hidden within the mountain are the Tannhäuser Cave and the Venus Cave.
Goethe also highlighted the mystical nature of the mountain in his work *Der getreue Eckehard*.
The Hörselberge are referred to as the „Mountains of the Gods“ in local lore but are also considered haunted mountains and the site of purgatory.
The most popular hiking route follows the ridge from the Kleine Hörselberg to the Große Hörselberg, offering splendid views over the Erbstromtal and stretching out to the foothills of the Thüringer Wald.
Along the way, hikers have a magnificent view of the Hörseltal.
From afar, the Wartburg (Model 14) and the Inselsberg, with its dense forested slopes, greet visitors.
