40 The Meininger Theater

Under the reign of George II in the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, the Ducal Court Theatre (Herzogliches Hoftheater Meiningen) became one of Germany’s premier venues for drama and orchestral performances.

The Meininger Court Theatre was inaugurated in 1831 with the opera *Fra Diavolo* by Daniel F. Auber.

Over time, many works by renowned authors such as Schiller, Kleist, Molière, Ibsen, and Shakespeare were performed, all under the grand concept of combining acting, dramaturgy, philosophy, and decorative elements into a unified artistic work.

Famous pianists and conductors, including Hans von Bülow, Richard Strauss, and Max Reger, enriched the concert life in Meiningen.

Through numerous concert tours and guest performances, the Meininger orchestra established itself as a highly skilled artistic ensemble.

The theatre, with its six Corinthian columns on the front facade, symbolizes the cultural commitment of the Meininger and made the city famous well beyond its borders.
