4 Carl – Alexander Tower in Ruhla

4 Carl – Alexander Tower in Ruhla

Visitors to the Erbstromtahl and hikers along the Rennsteig are likely familiar with the 21-meter-high tower on the Ringberg.

After conquering its 111 steps, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the game-rich Thuringian Forest and the Rhön with its romantic valleys.

In 1825, Dr. Gottlob König, who was the head of the Ruhla Forestry Institute at the time, commissioned the construction of a wooden observation platform at the site.

This was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Grand Duke Carl August’s rule.

In 1867, Alexander Ziegler commissioned architect Eduard Müller to construct an 18-meter-high wooden tower, which he named after Grand Duke Carl Alexander.

However, this tower collapsed during a storm in August 1896.

In 1898, the construction of the steel tower began.

The panoramic view, designed by Ruhla teacher August Lemmert, highlights notable locations and elevations visible from the tower platform.

A comprehensive renovation of the tower took place in 2014.

The town of Ruhla has owned the tower since 1956.

It serves as a regional landmark, visible from afar across the heights and valleys of the western Thuringian Forest.
