38 Brunnenhaus in Popperode
The over 1200-year-old imperial city of Mühlhausen, beautifully situated at the foot of the Hainich Forest, is home to not only magnificent churches and townhouses but also a very unique structure – the Brunnenhaus (Fountain House) at the spring in Popperode.
The nearby earth-fall spring, believed to have been created by a large earthquake in the 12th century, has been enclosed in a round basin.
From the semicircular seating rows that rise towards the back around the basin, you get a great view of the Brunnenhaus itself, with its timber-framed upper story resting on an arcade hall.
The solid, slender stone columns of the arcade hall exude strength and serenity.
However, during the annual Brunnenfest (Fountain Festival), tranquility and calm are replaced with a lively celebration.
This traditional festival was first documented in 1605 and reflects the openness and zest for life of the people of Mühlhausen.
The Brunnenhaus provides a perfect backdrop for beautiful weddings.
The Brunnenhaus is also a station of the German Timber-framed Route.
