37 Rathaus in Treffurt
Following the course of the Werra River to the north, you reach the charming small town of Treffurt beneath the ruins of the Normannstein Castle.
The town center is characterized by hundreds of timber-framed houses in the Thuringian-Hessian style.
The sight of the intricate details in the timber-frame construction and the exceptional wood carvings transports visitors to another time.
Among the most beautiful half-timbered houses in the region is the medieval town hall in the city center.
Built around 1550 on older foundations, it is dominated by the tower added in 1616, which towers over the entire marketplace.
Its Renaissance style contrasts with the Romanesque architecture of St. Boniface Church.
Beneath the double-sided staircase at the entrance of the town hall, you can discover the coat of arms of the manor, a testament to the building’s eventful history.
The corner columns of the tower are also noteworthy, depicting St. George on the right and St. Michael on the left.
Together with the towns of Stolberg, Bleicherode, Worbis, Mühlhausen, Wanfried, Vacha, and Schmalkalden, Treffurt is part of the German Timber-framed Route “From the Harz to the Thuringian Forest.”
