36 Rathaus in Vacha

36 Rathaus in Vacha

The Vacha Town Hall was built by a carpenter from Bad Hersfeld, Hans Weber, who carved the construction details on a board.

He incorporated elements typical of Hessian timber-framed buildings, particularly the triangular wooden tenon under the window sills, which adds both stability and beauty to the large arches.

Other notable design features include the coarsely carved corner posts, beam heads, thresholds, and consoles, visible especially on the bay window.

The lower floor is made of sandstone, with the only decoration being the large entrance portal.

The interior of the building only hints at its former splendor.

In the lower hall, a wall painting depicts important events in the history of Vacha.

Vacha is a stop on the German Timber-framed Route “From the Harz to the Thuringian Forest.”

At the town square of Vacha, visitors immediately notice a large, richly decorated timber-framed house – the Widemark. Built in 1613 by Caspar von Widemarkter, the deputy of the Hessian Elector, it remained privately owned for many years before becoming the town hall of Vacha in 1911.
