34 Main Train Station in Eisenach

34 Main Train Station in Eisenach

The old train station building was located outside the city walls.

It was a simple late-classical structure that stood out favorably from other brick buildings constructed during that period, as noted by Eisenach historian Dr. H. Helmbold.

Until the end of the 19th century, Bahnhofstrasse was a peaceful avenue, with lime trees lining both sides of the street, offering shade to the strolling citizens.

With the expansion of the Eisenach-Coburg route, the Werrabahn, Eisenach developed into an important railway hub and border station, as the Werrabahn did not belong to the Thuringian Railway Company.

The increased traffic at the station and in the city itself made it necessary to remodel the station around the turn of the century.

The old building was demolished, and the current station building was constructed according to plans by royal land surveyor Cuny.

Thanks to the railroad, the city of Wartburg grew into an economic, cultural, and tourist center of western Thuringia.
