29 Town Hall in Gotha
29 Town Hall in Gotha
The building was originally constructed in 1570 as a market hall with shops on the east side.
After the great city fire a hundred years later, the architect A. Rudolphi transformed it into the town hall.
The 40-meter-high town hall tower dominates the city center and serves as a prominent landmark from many locations.
The north façade, with its ornate gable and magnificent portal, was thoroughly renovated during the building’s complete restoration.
In front of the building stands a Baroque shell fountain from 1725.
As the residence city of the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha, Gotha gained significant recognition and developed into one of the most important cities in Thuringia.
In the middle of the long, gently rising market square, which leads up to Schloss Friedenstein (Model 76), you can admire the Town Hall of Gotha, a magnificent Renaissance building.
