28 “Alte Münze” in Schleiz
The building with the Baroque towers was first mentioned as the „Herrschaftliches Farbhaus“ (Noble Color House) in 1647.
Today, in the renovated “Alte Münze,” you will find, among other things, the city information center.
It also hosts numerous exhibitions, and in a beautiful wedding room, couples can tie the knot.
The “Alte Münze” began minting coins in 1678.
To create the minting tools, specialists were brought in, including Johann Adam Böttger.
He was the father of Johann Friedrich Böttger, the inventor of European porcelain, who was born in Schleiz in 1682.
Another famous personality from the city is Konrad Duden, born in 1829 near Wesel in the Rhineland.
He served as the director of the municipal grammar school from 1869 to 1876. In 1872, he published the Schleizer Duden— a guide to standardized spelling, which quickly gained regional importance.
