27 Tower Windmill in Dittrichshütte

South of the Thuringian Basin rises the often-celebrated Thuringian Forest.

Together with the adjoining Thuringian Slate Mountains, it forms a mountain range about 160 km long.

In the Saalfeld Heights region, at the transition from the Thuringian Forest to the Thuringian Slate Mountains, lies the village of Dittrichshütte.

The tower windmill stands as a landmark of Dittrichshütte, right in the center of the village.

This tourist gem was built in 1865.

Between 1974 and 1981, the mill underwent a major restoration and was saved from decay by a group of friends.

The mill now houses a museum where visitors can learn in detail about the history of the mill and the technology of grain milling.

Guided tours are also available.

On Mill Day, there are tours and visits with refreshments, and local customs are showcased.
