22 Paulinzella Monastery Ruins in Paulinzella
The ruins of the former Benedictine monastery church in Paulinzella are an impressive testament to the Romanesque era.
According to legend, the Saxon noblewoman Paulina founded the double monastery in 1102 after seeing a vision in a dream.
For more than 400 years, the monastery served as a spiritual center for a region encompassing over 50 villages.
Even today, the grandeur and majesty, as well as the simplicity and harmony of the structure, remain impressive.
The massive columns, cube capitals, and tower complex reflect the exceptional craftsmanship of the medieval builders and stonemasons.
Next to the monastery complex lies the hunting lodge, which houses an extensive exhibition on the monastery’s history, forestry, and hunting traditions.
Visitors can learn about the monastery’s eventful past and view significant artifacts such as:
- The Oberwirbach reliquary treasure
- A missal (prayer book) from 1493
- Coins minted during the monastery era
