2 The Burschenschaftsdenkmal in Eisenach
2 The Burschenschaftsdenkmal in Eisenach
In memory of the student fraternity meeting of 1817, during which the will of the students for national unity was manifested, the student fraternities erected a monument in 1902 on the Göpelskuppe in Eisenach.
It symbolizes the unity of the German tribes and proudly greets the Wartburg Castle from high above the city.
Nine columns, each more than 2 meters in diameter, represent the German student fraternities and are held together at a height of 17 meters by the words – FREEDOM – HONOR – FATHERLAND.
The turret-like round structure, adorned with figures and with stone-carved heads of great German men, was designed by the Dresden architect Wilhelm Kreis.
The monument houses an exhibition on the history of the student fraternities and video presentations on the history of the monument.Once the balconies have been climbed to a high altitude, a magnificent view over the Thuringian Forest, the Hörselberge, and the Wartburg awaits as a reward for the effort.
