19 The Former Electoral Mainz Governor’s Residence in Erfurt

The former Electoral Mainz Governor’s Residence, which enriches Erfurt’s cityscape particularly through its representative portal, was built between 1711 and 1740 based on ideas by Maximilian von Welsch in the Renaissance style.

After a turbulent history under the Mainz Governor Carl Theodor Freiherr von Dalberg and during the Napoleonic era, it served from 1816 to 1845 as the seat of the President of the Prussian Government District of Erfurt.

Great minds of German culture, such as Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Wieland, and Wilhelm von Humboldt, shaped the character of this building.

In 1945, the residence served as the American and later the Russian headquarters.

Today, it houses the State Chancellery and serves as the official residence of the Minister President of the Free State of Thuringia.
