17 Mountain Railway at Oberweißbach

The Oberweißbach Mountain Railway is a unique technical feature in the German railway network.

It is a 1.4 km long funicular railway that overcomes a height difference of 320 meters in just 18 minutes.

Built between 1919 and 1923, it remains the steepest mountain railway in the world capable of transporting standard gauge carriages.

During the ride from the valley station Obstfelderschmiede to the Oberweißbach district of Lichtenhain, passengers enjoy breathtaking views over the Schwarzatal valley and its surrounding mountain ranges.

Originally designed for both passenger and freight transport, one of the railcars still stands slanted on a goods platform, level with the mountain. The other railcar consists of horizontal segments, as is typical for funicular railways carrying passengers.

Both cars always depart from the mountain and valley stations simultaneously and pass each other midway. From Lichtenhain station, a nostalgic railcar with a trailer continues on a flat route to Cursdorf.
