16 Castle Wilhelmsburg at Schmalkalden
16 Castle Wilhelmsburg at Schmalkalden
The town of Schmalkalden, spared from devastating fires, is one of Thuringia’s special sights due to its historical old town buildings.
Overlooking the town is Wilhelmsburg Castle, the landmark of Schmalkalden, built by the Hessian Landgrave Wilhelm IV (1585 – 1590).
The castle is one of the most significant monuments of Renaissance architecture in Germany.
A steep castle street leads past Luther House to the castle complex, which has been the seat of the Hessian city lords since the Middle Ages.
The stucco decorations and paintings in the castle chapel appear both magnificent and delicate, and a wooden Renaissance organ makes the visit a unique experience.
The castle museum offers insight into the eventful 16th century. Martin Luther and his ideas are given special attention, along with the history of the castle itself.
The castle is a stop on the German Half-Timbered House Route „From the Harz to the Thuringian Forest.“
