117 Husenkirche in Bad Salzungen

117 Husenkirche in Bad Salzungen

The Husenkirche is the oldest church in the Salzunger region and was the seat of the archpriest in the medieval church organization of Thuringia.

The stone structure of the church was built in 1161, although it is likely that a wooden building had stood at this location since the time of Boniface.

In the 1530s, the parish of Husen was dissolved and merged with the city parish of St. Simplicius.

In 1617, the renovated and almost entirely rebuilt Husenkirche was consecrated again.

At the end of World War II, the church was heavily damaged and remained as a ruin.

This ruin stands on the Husen Cemetery, the historic cemetery of Bad Salzungen, which originated from the churchyard of the Husenkirche.

According to legend, Martin Luther’s parents, Hans and Margarethe (née Lindemann), were married in front of the Husenkirche and were blessed in the church.

Bad Salzungen is located in the „Luther Region.“

You can walk in the footsteps of Luther on the Luther Trail or on tours through the beautiful landscapes of the Hainich, the Thuringian Forest, and the Rhön, bringing history to life.
